Within the category of the Immune system, the Mast cell is an underappreciated culprit of the aging process. These cells, which are integral to the workings of the innate immune system, are also increasingly destructive, releasing key proteases and substances that dissolve tissues and precipitate more and more disease as we age.

Unfortunately mast cells increase in tissues over time, and controlling their degranulation and consequent release of destructive substances is critical in the process of controlling age-related pathology.
