Jean Hébert
Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Neurogeneticist. Funded by SENS Research Foundation
Brain tissue replacement
-
Jean Hébert began his career studying how embryonic stem cells generate the early cell lineages that make up mammalian embryos, with the ultimate goal of using the knowledge gained for regenerative purposes. These early studies were undertaken in Dr. Gail Martin’s lab at the University of California, San Francisco, as part of his Ph.D. thesis. Jean then moved to Stanford University for postdoctoral studies with Dr. Susan McConnell, where he focused on neural stem cells and how they generate the neocortex, the part of our brains that we use for our highest cognitive functions. These studies continued after he joined the faculty at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Since then, the Hébert lab is working on establishing tissue replacement strategies to reverse at once all forms of age-related damage. A central goal of the Hébert Lab is to reconstruct neocortical tissue in such a way that the activity of this new tissue can encode useful behavior to the animal. One strategy for approaching this goal is by combining a normal complement of neocortical cell types for transplantation, including neuronal, glial, and vascular subtypes, and arranging the cells in a laminar cytoarchitecture that resembles the normal neocortex.

Dr. Sandra Kaufmann
Kaufmann AntiAging Institute, CEO
DNA repair and beyond
-
Dr. Sandra Kaufmann began her academic career in the field of cellular biology, earning a Master’s Degree from the University of Connecticut in Tropical Ecology and Plant Physiology. Turning to medicine, she received her medical degree at the University of Maryland and completed a residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. Presently, she is the Regional Medical Director of Pediatric Anesthesia of South Florida for Envision Health Care and the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
In the realm of Longevity, she is the author and creator of the Kaufmann Protocol, a systematic explanation of why we age on a cellular basis coupled with an organized system to delay the aging process. This theory was introduced in the book The Kaufmann Protocol: Why we Age and How to Stop it which has been recognized by many longevity leaders as the go-to tome for understanding the aging process.
In addition, she has developed the Kaufmann Rating system, a numerical tool that evaluates molecular agents based on available scientific evidence. This process, the only one of its kind, allows longevity seekers a scientifically-based methodology to determine which longevity protocol best fits their lifestyle and health issues.
Thus, she is well respected in the longevity community for presenting viable and scientifically based aging solutions that are available to everyone. She appears on weekly podcasts around the world, sits on longevity boards, and has spoken at innumerable health and biohacking seminars.
Dr. Bill Andrews
CEO, Sierra Sciences
Solving a major barrier to super longevity
-
Dr. Bill Andrews is the Founder and CEO of Sierra Sciences, a company focused on finding ways to extend human lifespan and health span through telomere maintenance. Telomeres are found at the tips of our chromosomes and have been shown, in thousands of scientific peer-reviewed studies, to be the clock of aging in humans. When telomeres get shorter, we get older, and our health declines.
As a scientist, athlete, and executive, Bill continually pushes the envelope and challenges convention. He has been featured in Popular Science, The Today Show, and numerous documentaries on the topic of life extension including, most recently, the movie The Immortalists in which he co-stars with Dr. Aubrey de Grey. Bill is known for being a scientist first, focusing on scientific research, allowing others, instead, to market the products that his company discovers.
Bill has been a medical researcher in biotech since 1981, focusing on cancer, heart disease, and inflammation research, though his passion has always been aging. In the early-to-mid 1990s, while at Geron Corporation, Bill led the research to discover both the RNA and protein components of the human enzyme called telomerase. This enzyme is responsible for preventing telomeres from shortening in human reproductive cells, and this is why our children are born younger than we are even though they come from our old cells. Inducing this enzyme to lengthen telomeres in all our cells, not just our reproductive cells, to reverse aging and declining health due to aging, is the principal goal of Sierra Sciences.

Staying Alive
-
In 1997 I was a board certified family practice physician that was 59 years old, overweight, poorly conditioned body and rapidly declining health. I couldn’t tie my shoes without losing my breath. My stomach was huge, my muscles and joints ached, and I was miserable. I decided it was time to focus some much needed medical attention on myself.
Not knowing where to start I began reading fitness magazines and came across an article that featured the winners of the Body-for-LIFE contest. I showed them to my girlfriend, Annie, and she said ‘this is exactly what you need to do’. I followed a low-glycemic/low-fat diet, took supplements, and plunged into a heavy exercise regimen with help from a former Navy Seal personal trainer, Ernie Baul. At the end of 1998, at 60 years of age and after consistently eating right and training right, I became the GRAND CHAMPION in Bill Phillip’s 1998 Body-for-LIFE contest.
I continued to be committed to the Fitness Lifestyle yet despite my hard work and dedication I started loosing ground as I edged toward 63. I was slowly losing muscle mass, strength and I was regaining body fat. My energy level was waning, as was my libido. I had heard about the Anti-Aging Medicine Movement, so I investigated further. I learned a whole new level of protocols and philosophies and immediately agreed to become a patient. Within a couple weeks I started to see and feel a marked shift in my body, mind, and spirit. I was once again becoming a vibrant, healthy and happy man. It was life altering and It became the catalyst that moved me from Family Medicine to healthy aging medicine. I wanted every man and woman that struggled as I had to have hope for a better life.Today at 78 years of age I am in the best shape of my life. I am in the gym 5 days a week. I have a thriving practice in Charleston, West Virginia (The Life Center for Healthy Aging), and I have authored three books: The Life Plan, Mastering the Life Plan and The Life Plan Diet.
At the end of 2012 Men’s Fitness Magazine selected me and 24 others as the top 25 fittest men of the year. The other 24 honorees were men in their 20’s and 30’s and most were professional athletes or actors. The program works, I am living my dream, and there is no end in sight. It just keeps getting better. It would have never happened if I had not made the decision to live a healthier life. While your life may not take the same path as mine, it most certainly can be more productive, happier, and healthier for longer if you start taking care of it now. It is never too late, nor too early, to start living a healthy and fit lifestyle.
